The Seed of Woman
“And I will put enmity between you (the serpent) and the woman (Eve), and between your seed (plural) and her seed (singular)…”
– GENESIS 3:15 NASB95 –
Now some of you may be wondering why we kicked off this Christmas journey with a curse. I hear you. Be not dismayed! For it’s in this curse, we also find God’s promise of Great Blessing.
In the first part of this verse (and we’ll look at the rest of the verse tomorrow), God Himself speaks the very first Christmas prophecy from the Garden of Eden. Sin and death have just entered the world through “the serpent’s” (Satan’s) deception of Adam and Eve.
As God pronounces a curse over the serpent (with Adam and Eve looking on), He reveals this is only the beginning of a great supernatural battle between the serpent and Eve’s Descendant (Jesus).
But there is also good news here: God declares He has set a plan of salvation in motion and will send a Savior. He will be born from Eve’s seed, but not Adam’s. “Seed” here is singular in the Hebrew pointing to a specific Descendant as well as a view to the glorious virgin birth of the coming Messiah.
