Born of a Virgin
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”
– ISAIAH 7:14 ESV –
While some versions incorrectly translate this verse to read “a virgin,” the Hebrew is quite specific: “the virgin.” Actually, any virgin birth would be more than sufficient for a sign, but God wanted us to know 700 years in advance that He had chosen one specific woman to carry His only begotten Son – Mary.
Then Gabriel pulls back the veil on this eternally unique miracle as he speaks to her: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:34 NIV). God Himself will be the Father and the virgin Mary will be the mother. As foretold, the Messiah will be both God and man.
Words simply fall short. That’s why Paul calls this profound mystery “indescribable” (2 Corinthians 9:15 NASB).
